This is the original I-80 Sports Blog interview with Tony Gonzalez — preserved from the I-80 archive and presented here as part of THE TAPE ROOM.
Long before old interviews became clips, embeds, and forgotten links, this one survived as a 12½-minute video file sitting in the archive.
We found the original tape.
What follows isn’t a retrospective recreation or a modern discussion about Gonzalez’s career. It’s the interview itself, preserved from the original I-80 Sports Blog reporting.
Tony Gonzalez spent 17 seasons redefining what an NFL tight end could be.
By the time his career ended, Gonzalez had established himself as one of the most productive pass-catchers in NFL history and helped transform the tight end position from a primarily blocking-oriented role into one of the most dangerous weapons in the modern passing game.
But statistics and career retrospectives tell only part of that story.
Sitting in the original I-80 Sports Blog archive was something considerably more interesting:
The interview itself.
More than 12 minutes of original video with Gonzalez, preserved in the same 1920 × 1080 WMV file that survived from the original production.
This isn’t a modern retrospective assembled from old quotes.

Why This Tape Matters
Statistics can document Tony Gonzalez’s career.
This tape preserves something different.
It captures Gonzalez speaking for himself, answering questions in an original I-80 Sports Blog interview that survived long after the original production was finished.
And unlike many pieces of old web content, the surviving artifact isn’t merely a transcript, a dead embed, or a reference to an interview that once existed.
The original video survived.
The file discovered in the I-80 archive runs 12 minutes and 28 seconds and remains in its original full-HD 1920 × 1080 resolution.
Its embedded metadata even retains a small piece of its production history: the WMV was exported using the Flip4Mac WMV Export Component for QuickTime on a Mac.
That is exactly the kind of digital breadcrumb The Tape Room exists to preserve.
