Can Its Rs.1,402 Crore ONGC Contract Drive Higher Profits?

0

India’s efforts to increase domestic oil and gas production are creating new opportunities for companies providing drilling, processing and production support services. However, securing large contracts does not necessarily guarantee stronger profitability.

For companies expanding into capital-intensive projects, the ability to control operating costs, maintain margins and generate cash flows remains equally important. Deep Industries Limited is entering this phase, with its expanding order book offering growth visibility even as profitability faces pressure.

With a market capitalization of Rs. 4,106.88 crore, the shares of Deep Industries Ltd were trading at Rs. 641.70 per share, up 0.32 percent from its previous closing price of Rs. 639.65 apiece. The stock trades at a P/E of 17.46x on a consolidated basis.

Q2 FY27 Financial Performance

Deep Industries reported consolidated revenue of Rs.295.43 crore in Q2 FY27, registering a 33.7% increase from Rs.221.01 crore in the corresponding quarter last year. The company achieved its highest-ever quarterly revenue, supported by strong operational execution.

However, operating profitability grew at a considerably slower pace. EBITDA increased by 9.9% to Rs.124 crore from Rs.112.86 crore, while the reported EBITDA margin declined from 46.6% to 39.6%, representing a contraction of 700 basis points.

Operating expenses increased by 46.1% to Rs.189.03 crore from Rs.129.41 crore, outpacing revenue growth. This suggests that additional business activity has not translated into proportionate operating earnings.

The company’s reported EBITDA also includes other income, which declined from Rs.21.26 crore to Rs.17.60 crore during the quarter.

Despite these pressures, consolidated net profit increased by 14% to Rs.81.22 crore from Rs.71.23 crore. Lower finance costs, which declined 37.9% to Rs.4.04 crore, provided some support to earnings.

Rs.1,402 Crore ONGC Contract: A New Growth Opportunity

One of the company’s major growth opportunities is its Rs.1,402 crore production enhancement contract secured from Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) for 15 years.

Unlike conventional drilling or equipment-hiring contracts, production enhancement involves improving hydrocarbon recovery from mature oil and gas fields. The company will deploy specialised equipment and technical solutions to increase production and extend the operating life of existing fields.

Management expects incremental production revenue to begin contributing from Q3 FY27. To support the project, Deep Industries plans capital expenditure of approximately Rs.150 crore over the next 12 months.

The contract provides a long-term revenue opportunity, but its contribution to profitability will depend on production improvements, operating efficiency and investment requirements. Importantly, the contract value is spread across 15 years. Therefore, its headline size should not be interpreted as immediate revenue or profit.

Rs.3,089 Crore Order Book Supports Growth Visibility

Deep Industries maintained a consolidated revolving order book of approximately Rs.3,089 crore as of September 30, 2026, compared with Rs.3,047 crore at the beginning of the quarter.

During Q2 FY27, the company secured additional orders worth Rs.337 crore while executing Rs.295 crore. Management also indicated a bidding pipeline of Rs.700–800 crore, providing opportunities for further order additions.

The company operates across natural gas compression, dehydration, integrated project management, drilling and offshore services through Dolphin Offshore. This diversified presence provides exposure to different stages of oil and gas operations. However, future profitability will depend on the margins generated by individual contracts rather than order book expansion alone.

Improving Cash Flows Strengthen Financial Position

Despite declining operating margins, Deep Industries reported improvements in cash generation and working capital management. Company-reported free cash flow increased by 35.4% to Rs.154.72 crore during H1 FY27, compared with Rs.114.29 crore in H1 FY26.

Receivable days declined from 131 to 99, excluding legacy receivables from the Dolphin group. This suggests improved collection efficiency and reduced working capital pressure. Total debt stood at Rs.232.94 crore as of September 2026, with the company reporting a debt-to-equity ratio of 0.13 times.

These improvements are important considering the planned investment in production enhancement activities. However, sustaining cash generation after additional capital expenditure will be essential.

Can Management Deliver Its FY27 and FY28 Targets?

Management expects operating revenue to grow by 30–35% in FY27, followed by another 30–35% growth in FY28. It has also guided for profit after tax of Rs.350–370 crore in FY27 and Rs.470–500 crore in FY28.

Against H1 FY27 net profit of Rs.170.37 crore, achieving the FY27 target would require approximately Rs.179.63–199.63 crore in the second half. This makes the execution of existing contracts, commencement of production enhancement revenue and management of operating expenses particularly important.

Conclusion

Deep Industries has established a sizable order book, improved cash generation and entered long-term production enhancement services. These developments support its growth prospects over the coming years.

However, the latest quarterly results reveal a clear divergence between revenue growth and operating profitability. The Rs.1,402 crore ONGC contract could become an important earnings contributor, but its success will depend on execution, operating margins and returns on invested capital.

For investors, the central question is whether Deep Industries can translate its expanding business opportunities into sustained profit growth without compromising its improving financial position.
