4 Numbers That Could Decide What Comes Next

Tata Elxsi’s stock has had a difficult year, falling to a 52-week low of ₹2,996 before making a sharp recovery after its September-quarter results. The company has now reported another quarter of double-digit revenue growth, while operating margins also improved. However, the bottom line has not moved at the same pace. Here is what the latest numbers tell us about the recovery.

Tata Elxsi is part of the Tata Group and provides design, engineering and technology services across transportation, media and communications, and healthcare. Its work includes automotive software, connected products, digital platforms and product development.

Shares of Tata Elxsi closed at ₹3,845 on the BSE, up 4.06% from the previous close of ₹3,695. The company’s market cap stands at about ₹23,956.55 crore.

From ₹2,996 low to ₹3,426: How strong is the rebound?

Tata Elxsi touched a 52-week low of ₹2,996 recently, against a 52-week high of ₹5,950. The stock closed at ₹3,426.70 on October 13, before rising further during October 14 trading. At the latest available price of around ₹3,630, the stock was roughly 21% above its 52-week low, but still about 39% below its 52-week high.

The immediate trigger for the rebound was the company’s Q2 FY27 performance. Shares gained strongly after the results as the market reacted to better revenue growth and improved margins. However, the stock is still well below its previous high, which means the recent bounce has recovered only part of the earlier decline.

The price movement therefore shows two different stories: the earnings announcement has improved sentiment in the short term, but the stock has not yet returned to its earlier valuation levels.

Revenue at ₹1,056 crore: Has growth improved?

The answer is yes. Tata Elxsi reported revenue from operations of ₹1,055.66 crore in Q2 FY27, up 15% year-on-year from ₹918.10 crore. On a sequential basis, revenue increased 3.38% from ₹1,021.11 crore in Q1 FY27. This is important because the company had already crossed the ₹1,000 crore quarterly revenue mark in Q1. It has now moved further above that level.

The growth was also broad-based. Transportation, Media & Communications and Healthcare & Life Sciences all recorded sequential growth during the quarter. Transportation remained the largest business and was a key contributor to the improvement in the quarter.

This makes the latest quarter stronger than simply a one-segment recovery. The company is seeing demand across its main verticals, although the pace of growth differs between businesses.

EBITDA margin at 21.9%: Is profitability recovering?

This is one of the strongest numbers from the quarter. Tata Elxsi’s EBITDA rose to ₹231.4 crore, up 19.7% year-on-year and 7.1% quarter-on-quarter. More importantly, EBITDA margin improved to 21.9%, compared with 21.2% in Q1 FY27.

That 70-basis-point sequential improvement is significant because the company had to deal with higher employee and operating costs. Despite these pressures, operating profitability improved.

The result suggests that the increase in revenue is beginning to translate into better operating performance. EBITDA growth also outpaced revenue growth in Q2, which indicates some operating leverage.

The margin recovery is therefore clearer than it was after Q1. The bigger question now is whether Tata Elxsi can keep margins around these levels while continuing to invest in artificial intelligence, software-defined vehicles and other growth areas.

Net profit at ₹170 crore: Why is the bottom line still flat?

Tata Elxsi reported net profit of ₹170.3 crore in Q2 FY27, up around 10% year-on-year from ₹155 crore. However, profit was almost flat compared with ₹170.6 crore in Q1 FY27.

This creates an interesting gap between operating performance and the bottom line. Revenue increased 3.4% sequentially and EBITDA rose 7.1%, but net profit barely changed.

Higher employee and operating expenses continued to affect profitability. As a result, the company has not yet seen the same pace of improvement in PAT that it has seen in revenue and EBITDA. So, is the recovery broad-based? At the revenue and operating-profit level, the answer is increasingly yes. At the net-profit level, it is still uneven.

Brokerages See Signs Of A Turnaround

Management expects the second half of FY27 to be better than the first, even with Q3 being a shorter quarter with fewer working days. Media and communication should keep growing strongly, and the US and India are expected to stay healthy.

Margins could climb further from here, helped by higher utilisation (how much of the staff is billed to projects), which is at 78% against a goal of 81-82%, a better mix of junior and senior staff, no wage hike impact in the second half, and more work moving offshore.

ICICI Securities called the quarter a possible beginning of recovery and upgraded the stock to HOLD from REDUCE. It also finds the valuation of about 22 times one-year forward earnings attractive, close to the stock’s all-time low. Europe still looks weak though, no change expected there soon.

What comes next for Tata Elxsi?

The latest quarter has improved the recovery story, but it has not completely settled it. Revenue has reached ₹1,055.66 crore and EBITDA margin has moved up to 21.9%, showing better operating performance. At the same time, net profit remains almost unchanged sequentially at ₹170.3 crore.

The stock’s move from ₹2,996 to above ₹3,400 shows that the market has responded positively to the results. But with the shares still well below the ₹5,950 52-week high, the recovery has a long way to go. The next phase will depend on whether Tata Elxsi can maintain double-digit revenue growth, protect its improved margins and finally convert that operating improvement into stronger bottom-line growth.
