‘Doctor Odyssey’ Episode 4 Recap

0

It’s Wellness Week on Doctor Odyssey—but don’t let the theme fool you. Not much goes well for either the crew OR the passengers aboard the Odyssey in Episode 4.

After last episode’s plastic surgery disasters, we find the Odyssey ship sailing straight into a hurricane. As if things couldn’t get any worse, after Avery (Phillipa Soo) learns she earned a scholarship for medical school, she faces her own medical emergency: a case of appendicitis. Luckily, Tristan (Sean Teale) and Dr. Max (Joshua Jackson) come to her rescue.

Avery is not the only passenger who falls ill this episode. Amy Sedaris guest stars as wellness influencer Bethany Welles, who doesn’t seem to be a fan of Max’s “crimson aura.” Bethany comes down with copper poisoning, caused by her very own health concoction.

Tension escalates upon the arrival of Bethany’s personal chef Vivian (Laura Harrier), who isn’t as much of a chef as she proclaims to be. In efforts to reduce any raw food being served, Max enlists Tristan to oversee the kitchen preparation. Tristan strikes up an unlikely romance with Vivian—the duo can’t seem to get their hands, or lips, off each other. Avery is questionably jealous of the budding couple. The love triangle (quadrangle, if you’re counting Max) will continue, as Vivian is becoming a permanent member of the ship’s kitchen staff.

DOCTOR ODYSSEY TITANIC

Despite the rough weather, fortunately things didn’t go FULL Titanic for the Odyssey.

Other guest stars in this episode include Margaret Cho and Kate Berlant, who play wellness-obsessed cruise guests Judy and Agnes. Ironically, they find themselves in a health crisis of their own when their “Diva Dust smoothies” cause kidney failure. (No, a mysterious smoothie concoction can’t cure dyslexia or hiccups.) All is not well on the ship—especially as Agnes “accidentally” pierces Judy’s lung in an acupuncture session.

The drama will continue in next week’s Halloween-themed episode, which welcomes zombie illnesses (and perhaps even live zombies) aboard the Odyssey.
