Naperville police make 20th gun-related arrest at Topgolf parking lot in just under a year – Chicago Tribune
In just under a year, police have made 20 firearm-related arrests in the Naperville Topgolf parking lot — the latest logged over the weekend.
Camarion Jai Cobbins, 19 of Huntsville, Alabama, was arrested shortly after midnight Sunday outside the 3211 Odyssey Court business on one charge of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. His next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 5, according to DuPage County Circuit Court records.
Sunday’s arrest, as has been the case with the Naperville Topgolf arrests before it, was the result of a police officer performing a foot patrol through the business’ parking lot and spotting a gun in plain view.
According to Naperville police Cmdr. Rick Krakow, the officer was walking the Topgolf lot when they observed a black handgun in the rear passenger seat pocket of a vehicle. Officers set up surveillance on the vehicle and waited for its occupants to return, Krakow said.
Five people returned to the car and were detained for further investigation. At the conclusion of the investigation, officers determined that Cobbins was to be taken into custody, Krakow said. He was the only person arrested.
Online court records show the firearm that police spotted was a loaded Taurus 9mm Millennium G2 for which Cobbins did not have a valid Firearm Owner Identification card.
With the addition of Cobbins, 20 people have been arrested for gun-related charges outside Naperville’s Topgolf facility since August 2023 to date, Krakow confirmed. As of Monday, all 20 reported cases were still in court.
Prior to Sunday, the last firearm-related arrest made at the Naperville Topgolf lot was in May.
The last felony arrest was earlier this month. On July 25, Jeremy Boykins, 36 of East Chicago, Indiana, was arrested at 3211 Odyssey Court for possession of a controlled substance, police and court records show.
