Hyman Silerglad was on his way home from the grocery store when his wallet was attacked.
The incident happened around 10:30 p.m. on February 1 on East 86th Street between First and Second Avenues.
The attacker pushed the 91-year-old man to the ground and beat him while trying to steal his wallet.
“He said ‘I’m from Coney Island,’ and he’s not going to take my wallet,’ and that’s what he said,” said James Silverglad, the victim’s son.
Silverglade, a retired attorney, threw the would-be robber out of the game and grabbed his wallet.
Silverglade was seriously injured and was taken to the hospital. He spoke to Eyewitness News by phone last Wednesday.
“I couldn’t walk and I was in constant pain that never ended,” he explained. “I have to fight for my life. Who doesn’t want to fight well?”
Police were expected to remove the suspect from Union Square later Monday morning.
