Two employees at Provident Hospital were stabbed Monday afternoon, authorities said.

At about 1 p.m., a man armed with a “sharp object” stabbed a 56-year-old man in the chest at the hospital in the 500 block of East 51st Street, according to Chicago police. A statement from Cook County Health, which runs the Bronzeville hospital, said the victim was a staff member and that a second employee was also injured.

The 56-year-old was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center in fair condition, while the armed man was taken into custody, police said.

“We are grateful to our security team for their swift response,” Cook County Health spokesperson Alexandra Normington wrote in a statement. “Violence against healthcare workers is on the rise, and it is unacceptable. No one should have to fear for their safety while doing their job.”
