In the latest episode of the BL Podcast, Schneider Electric India and Sachin Bhalla, Vice President and Country General Manager, SAARC, talk about data centers in India. The discussion began by reflecting on the staggering data generation in the era of artificial intelligence, machine learning and the Internet of Things, and the urgent need to protect this data.
India currently ranks 13th globally in terms of data center capacity and is expected to grow exponentially. Sachin highlighted the rapid expansion of the data center industry, which is expected to grow at an annual rate of 20-30% over the next few years, with India expected to reach over 1 GW of capacity.
The conversation also highlighted India’s key role in the data center space, driven by its large population and rapid digitization. Startups, especially in the fintech and healthtech sectors, are at the forefront of this transformation and require reliable, cost-effective and high-quality data centers to support their disruptive models.
Despite the bright prospects, Sachin revealed the challenges faced by Indian data center operators such as land availability, approvals and capital requirements. However, these obstacles are gradually being overcome.
