Plymouth Township, Pennsylvania— “I’ve been a kindergarten teacher for 20 years,” said Peggy Smith of Ridge Park Elementary School. “Typically, if it was, there would probably be a few sets of twins.”
Smith and her colleagues were surprised to find that 17 sets of twins were entering kindergarten at Colonial School District schools this year.
They call this phenomenon “twin kindergarten.”
“Oh, that makes me excited because I have two of them in my room and they’re the cutest.”
Ridge Park has seven kindergarten classes. Each contains at least one twin, if not a pair.
“If we fought, we wouldn’t be in the same class,” joked kindergarten student Brene Smith.
Sarah Guckavan was a kindergarten teacher who thought she was ready for double trouble.
“I have twins myself. They are 16 years old,” she said. “You have to figure out how to manage them but still allow them to be individuals and be themselves.”
Teachers throughout the district treat each student with great care, keeping in mind the special bond between twins and siblings.
“We as a kindergarten team, we got this,” Gukavan said. “Whether you are alone, a twin or a pair, we will take care of you and you will learn well.”
