Longwood, Bronx (WABC) — A man accused of ambushing two police officers in 2020 has pleaded guilty to attempted murder and assault, among other charges.
The suspect, Robert Williams, 49, waived his right to stand on Thursday and pleaded guilty to shooting and wounding two officers in the Bronx in February 2020.
On the night of February 8, 2020, Williams first approached two officers sitting in a van on Simpson Street. Authorities said he spoke briefly to the officer before firing the shot, which struck Officer Paul Strovolino in the jaw and neck.
The morning after the incident, authorities said Williams opened fire inside the 41st Precinct, hitting Lieutenant Jose Gautero in the arm. He then went inside and fired more shots before being taken into custody.
Both Strovlino and Gautello survived.
When Williams is formally sentenced later this month, the judge tentatively agreed to a sentence of 23 years to life in prison.
PBA President Patrick Hendry said in a statement, “This hateful man was on a mission to kill the police. It was only by the grace of God and the skill of our police that he was unsuccessful. He must never step outside the cordon.” Outside.” The prison wall again. “
