How the Grinch stole a family’s Christmas tree.
A California family’s Christmas tree was stolen from the roof of their car in a ruthless crime straight out of a holiday classic.
Jesus and his wife had just purchased a tree in San Mateo Friday night and tied it to the roof of their SUV in the parking lot while they were out running some errands, he told ABC7.
But when the Bay Area couple returned to their car, they were shocked to find their Christmas tree was gone.
According to surveillance footage obtained by a local television station, the real-life Grinch decided to snatch the tree and run away.
The video shows a white SUV passing Jesus’ car and then reversing to park next to it.
The video shows a man then getting out of the white SUV, walking to the couple’s car, and cutting the ropes that tied the tree to the roof of the car one by one.
The video shows the man catching the Christmas tree as it rolls off the roof, carrying it to the back seat of his car and stuffing it into the trunk.
The video shows him struggling to close the trunk of the car before finally slamming it shut and driving away.
San Mateo police told ABC7 they will be keeping an eye on similar crimes as the holidays approach, but called the tree snatching incident a “unique case.”
Police added: “At this time of year, there are some well-meaning people who are more than willing to help those who cannot afford a tree.”
The suspect has not yet been identified.
The Christmas tree lot selling the stolen Jesus Christmas tree replaced it with a new tree, the outlet reported.
