19-year-old man shot in leg near busy Brooklyn street

Sunset Park, Brooklyn (WABC) — A 19-year-old man was rushed to the hospital Thursday after he was shot near a busy intersection in Brooklyn.

The shooting happened around 5:30 p.m. in Sunset Park along Fourth Avenue and 59th Street, a busy street near subway stations and playgrounds packed with children.

On the first day of school for many students, the streets were littered with multiple bullet casings and the streets were crowded with police.

A 19-year-old victim was shot in the left leg, police said.

Witnesses said there was a verbal altercation between the victim and the gunman before the shots rang out.

Edwin Hernandez and his father, Robert, ran a corner pizza stand. They said the gunshots caused the children to flee and that the victim and suspect had caused trouble here before.

“I just ran. I just ran to my store,” Edwin Hernandez said.

“They tried to steal my bike several times,” Robert Hernandez said.

It’s unclear what sparked the controversy.

The victim was taken to a nearby hospital where he is expected to survive.

No one has been arrested so far.
