Will help ensure stable power supply across Japan by promoting interconnection between Japan’s 50Hz and 60Hz networks
TOKYO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Mitsubishi Electric Corporation (TOKYO: 6503) has been awarded a contract by J-Power Transmission Network Co., Ltd. to supply 300MW voltage source converters (VSC) high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission equipment. The new Sakuma frequency conversion station in Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka Prefecture. The system is expected to be put into use by the end of March 2028.
After the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, Japanese transmission operators organized cross-regional coordination to provide wide-area services to transmission lines to achieve a more stable and efficient power supply across Japan.
Electricity in Japan has two different frequencies; eastern Japan is predominantly 50Hz, and western Japan is predominantly 60Hz. Since grids with different frequencies cannot be directly connected, frequency converters are required to exchange power between the two areas. The purpose of the project is to enhance interconnectivity between the two countries by building a new 50/60Hz frequency conversion station on the border between the two countries as part of Japan’s wide area power grid improvements.
