Fathorne, Mich.— A two-year-old girl walked away from her home in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula with two family dogs and was found hours later in the woods sleeping on the smaller dogs like a fluffy pillow, state police said.
“She lay down and used one of the dogs as a pillow and the other dog was lying next to her to keep her safe,” Lt. Mark Giananzio said Thursday. “It’s a truly remarkable story.”
Police used drones and dogs in the search, while local police and citizens from Michigan and neighboring Wisconsin helped search for the girls in remote, wooded areas.
Officers from the Iron Mountain Police Department in Michigan were called to a home in the Faithorn area of Menominee County around 8 p.m. Wednesday night after the girl went missing.
State police said a citizen riding an all-terrain vehicle spotted the girl about 3 miles (4.8 kilometers) from her home around midnight.
Giananzio said the girl was examined by medical staff and appeared to be in good health.
Fathorne is an unincorporated village located east of the Wisconsin state line and approximately 60 miles (97 kilometers) southwest of Marquette, Michigan.
