NEWARK, New Jersey (WABC) — A missing 6-year-old child with autism in Newark has been found safe.
Police said the child left the family’s apartment on Elizabeth Avenue in Newark between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. Monday.
The city immediately deployed police and search teams to search the neighborhood and nearby parks.
He was found sleeping in a parked vehicle in the area of Hansbury Avenue and Elizabeth Avenue, authorities announced around 1 p.m.
He may have crawled in to take shelter from the rain.
Police broke a window to find him and took him to hospital for observation.
Neighbors and community leaders breathed a sigh of relief after he was found safe.
“We’re grateful and appreciative of the way they’ve stepped up and come together to help us make this happen, so I want to thank everyone for coming forward,” Councilor Patrick Cool said. “We want to continue to support the family pray.”
