Nassau County, Long Island (WABC) — A longtime Long Island high school football coach is one of more than a dozen people indicted following a drug investigation.
Malvern High School coach Kito Lockwood, 49, does not face any drug or conspiracy charges but was charged in an indictment filed by the Nassau County district attorney with three counts of criminal possession of a firearm and three counts of third-degree criminal possession of a firearm. Weapons charges.
Lockwood pleaded not guilty and was released without bail to undergo pretrial services.
This is his 15th year as Malvern football coach.
Lockwood’s attorney, Frederick Brewington, said Lockwood inadvertently became involved in the investigation after sleeping at a friend’s house. He woke up to find the police descending on him.
According to Brewington, the gun charges against Lockwood stemmed from the discovery of guns and weapons at a friend’s home that did not belong to the high school coach.
“This individual is an employee of the district and a coach. We are aware of the allegations and have no comment at this time,” Malvern Police Chief Lorna Lewis said in a statement after the arrest.
The trafficking involved cocaine, crack and fentanyl.
The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office conducted surveillance for months at several locations allegedly used for drug trafficking, including Valley Stream, West Hempstead, Baldwin and Long Beach.
