POINT PLEASANT BEACH, New Jersey (WABC) — A New Jersey aquarium is mourning the death of a beloved seal who had been a part of the community for more than three decades.
The Jenkinson Aquarium in Point Pleasant Beach announced Wednesday that their beloved harbor seal, Lucille, has died.
“We are devastated,” the aquarium said in a statement posted on its Facebook page. “We are asking for your support and kindness as our team deals with our grief.” She will be deeply missed.
The seal first became a member of the Jenkinson family in 1991 after becoming trapped in the Point Pleasant/Bay Point Canal, the aquarium said.
Due to her visual impairment, Lucile cannot be released back into the wild.
The seal is 34 years old, more than a decade longer than the average lifespan of her wild cousins, the aquarium said.
