Last week, a man in Kisoro was shot dead by police after he allegedly attacked a shopkeeper and threatened him with a panga.
The deceased, 35-year-old Uwimana Radisi Baker alias Byirimana, a resident of Rugyendabare village, reportedly went to Komuhangi Stephen’s shop/bar at around 8:00 pm and demanded money while threatening him with a stick.
Bystanders chased Birimana away, but he returned multiple times and eventually grabbed Komuhangi and choked him.
Fearing for their safety, Komuhangi and others sought help from police officer Bazimaziki Wilson, who was guarding a nearby hotel.
When Constable Bazimaziki arrived and attempted to arrest Byirimana at his residence, Byirimana allegedly armed himself with a panga and threatened the officer.
Fearing for his life, Officer Bazimaziki shot Bairimana in the leg. Byirimana fell to the ground and Panga was withdrawn from him.
He succumbed to his injuries on the way to Kisoro Hospital.
Kigezi police spokesperson ASP Maate Elly confirmed the incident and said a team of officers had been dispatched to investigate the matter.
“We visited, analyzed and documented the crime scene,” ASP Elly said. “The statements of relevant witnesses have been obtained and a post-mortem examination has been carried out. Inquiries will be held soon,” he added.
