ICE conducted impact assessments of the impact bonds in the GPIF portfolio, covering a variety of impact categories ranging from emissions reduction and renewable energy generation to social impact, including job creation. GPIF has published a report detailing ICE’s impact assessment, including calculated impact metrics per dollar invested.
“We are committed to developing sustainable finance products and datasets that enable investors to not only manage their climate risks but also help quantify the potential impacts of their portfolios,” said Girish Narula, head of sustainable finance at ICE. “We are delighted to be able to Support GPIF in quantifying the potential impact of its investment in impact bonds and the emissions avoided. We will continue to work with clients to provide data analysis, modeling and comparative scenario analysis capabilities to measure and understand climate and investment risks and opportunities.”
ICE uses its extensive carbon emissions database and avoided emissions methodologies to build models that estimate avoided emissions for companies with products that enable the transition to a low-carbon economy and are used in the assessment of the GPIF. The report published by GPIF describes the process ICE uses to identify, analyze and measure the impact of emissions avoidance by companies in three sectors within the GPIF portfolio, including zero-emission vehicles, utilities and mining.
Avoided emissions are reductions in emissions that occur outside the product life cycle or value chain. By determining the emissions avoided by using the product, investors can identify opportunities for positive impact and quantify the real-world difference such investments can make.
