New York (WABC)—— The start of school next week has sparked fresh concerns about asylum seekers.
Staten Island Borough President Vito Fucella led a group Saturday that opposed the relaxation of vaccination rules for child immigrants.
The policy exception was intended to make it easier for newcomers to enter the public school system, but Fussella said the move was risky and hypocritical.
“We think that if you’re going to impose a standard on the average citizen, the same standard should apply to individuals who come from 120 different countries and want to go to school on their first day,” Fussella said.
The organization expects more than 20,000 migrant children to enroll in the city this year.
