New Jersey (WABC) — New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy is expected to name Secretary of State Tahershah Wie on Friday as the state’s next lieutenant governor.
Murphy will make the announcement at the Trenton State Capitol.
Chief Justice Stewart Rabner will be sworn in immediately Friday without Senate confirmation.
She succeeds Sheila Oliver, who died in office last month following a long illness.
Way will become the state’s third lieutenant governor and the second black woman to hold the position.
Way, 43, was a freelance owner in Passaic County and served as secretary of state throughout Murphy’s tenure.
Her husband is former New York Giants guard and current NFL executive Charles Way.
Way is expected to remain secretary of state while assuming his new role.
Murphy’s term is limited, and Way is not expected to run for his seat in 2025.
Murphy has until Sept. 15 to name Oliver’s successor.
