Brooklyn, New York (WABC) — The FDNY has added the names of 43 people who died in connection with the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks to the World Trade Center Memorial Wall.
This is the second largest group of names added to the World Trade Center Memorial Wall since 55 names were added in 2011.
FDNY families came together Wednesday to mourn those lost this year.
The wall commemorates those who died of illness during rescue and recovery efforts at the World Trade Center.
An inscription on the memorial wall reads: “In memory of those in the department who served bravely to protect life and property in New York City during the rescue and recovery efforts at Box 5-5-8087 World Trade Center, Manhattan.”
“As the 22nd anniversary of 9/11 approaches, FDNY continues to feel the impact of that day,” said Fire Chief Laura Kavanagh. Salute to those who gave their lives, and this wall of memory will go from strength to strength.” “These brave men and women were on the ground at the World Trade Center on that day and in the days and months after the attack, participating in rescue and recovery efforts. We will never forget them.”
The grandchildren point to the new names on the monument. The widow leaves flowers. The department added a flag for each member who passed away this year. A sad garden full of American colors, growing tragically.
On September 11, a total of 343 FDNY personnel died. Since that day, they have lost nearly as many lives to the disease as they did last year — 43 last year alone.
Flag gardens may grow again this year.
