Ethereum developers have announced the launch of a new testnet for the Ethereum blockchain. The testnet is expected to be an advanced version of the Goerli testnet, one of Ethereum’s main testnets, and replace it upon its impending deprecation and shutdown.
Ethereum launches Holesky testnet
EthereumThe world’s largest blockchain by TVL and the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization marks a major step in its development with the latest developments in the crypto space.
On Friday, September 15, developers announced the official deployment of the new testnet Holesky on the Ethereum mainnet. Kols Network Ambassador Manager Amy Kols described the key features and details of the newly released Holesky testnet in a September 14 X (formerly Twitter) post.
Kols explained that the reason for deploying the Holesky testnet was to take over Gurley Testnet Facing supply issues. She revealed that the Holesky network will be used to test complex upgrades and infrastructure and will continue to operate and be supported by the network until 2028.
The Holesky testnet provides Ethereum developers and validators with a powerful and secure platform to test new features and upgrades. It is said that the newly released test network has stronger test demand processing capabilities than the Goerli test network.
Validators of the testnet will also receive 1.6 billion Holesky Ether (HETH) to start the operation of the testnet. The amount of HETH is a staggering number, 10 times the amount of Ethereum (ETH) on the Ethereum mainnet and Goerli testnet.
Developers stated that a large supply of HETH to validators will help the testnet have higher testing capabilities, make it more scalable, and have better staking capabilities, infrastructure, and protocol development.
Currently the Holesky testnet has been launched Coinciding with the anniversary of the Ethereum mergeras it transitions from a Proof-of-Work (PoW) network to a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) network.
Horsky to acquire Gurley
Ethereum’s Goerli testnet Originally launched in 2018, it is one of the famous testnets of Ethereum. Between 2017 and 2022, developers deployed Multiple testnetsincluding the currently active Sepolia testnet, and ropstone and Rinkeby testnet, both of which were deprecated and closed on October 5, 2022.
The Holesky testnet will reportedly replace Goerli after it is deprecated and shuts down in 2024. The development efficiency of the Holesky test network is higher than that of the Goerli test network because its HETH supply is higher, overcoming the problem of Goerli’s inability to provide enough HETH. Amount of Goerli ETH to handle testing needs.
After Goerli is deprecated, the Ethereum network will have only two active testnets: Holesky and Sepolia. Both testnets will be supported and used to improve development and innovation in the ecosystem.
