“GL’s vMobile™ makes driving and walking testing easy and convenient. During testing, you can connect to two mobile phones using the vMobile™ internal Bluetooth interface, or to a mobile radio using the vMobile™ PTT analog interface. Use vMobile™ scripts to make and receive calls and send/record audio during established calls, enabling automated testing. Audio analysis metrics include speech using the POLQA algorithm (ITU-P.863) or using the PESQ algorithm (ITU-P.862) Quality MOS and, if needed, automatic DAQ conversion,” said Robert Bichefsky, Director of Engineering at GL Communications Inc.
In addition to audio MOS, other metrics include one-way and round-trip latency, signal and noise levels, audio dropout, frequency and power consumption analysis. Call metrics such as failed or dropped calls are also provided. vMobile™ works seamlessly with existing GL VQuad™ solutions for convenient end-to-end testing.
vMobile™ includes embedded WiFi for control/status and sending results and recorded audio to a centralized system for real-time analysis. If WiFi is not available, vMobile™ and status can be controlled using a Bluetooth connection or directly from the onboard vMobile™ hardware menu. During testing, all results and events can be tagged with GPS coordinates using an onboard GPS receiver, including an external antenna used during in-vehicle driving tests. If testing is done inside a building or where GPS is not available, the vMobile™ Indoor Tracking System (ITS) can be used to plot the results.
vMobile™ control, including configuration, operations, and status, can be accomplished using the vMobile™ Console web browser or console application (installed on Android and iOS devices). If WiFi is not available, all control can be done via Bluetooth connection and all captured audio files can be pulled from the vMobile™ by simply connecting it to any PC via the USB-C interface (vMobile™ will appear as a drive) out for analysis).
vMobile™ can also automate GL NetTest (data testing) from any mobile device. NetTest includes an application (supports Android and IOS devices) that can generate a variety of custom tests such as TCP (speed), UDP (capacity), HTTP, VoIP, FTP, DNS and video simulations. All results are sent to the same central database and can be plotted on Google Maps using a mobile device GPS receiver.
All results and events are sent to a central database and accessed via WebViewer™ (web browser). WebViewer™ displays all measurement and call events and can generate custom reports including line and bar charts. Results can be plotted on a Google Map using custom pins describing pass/fail and errors during testing. With WebViewer™, users can schedule automated reports to be emailed to any address.
The driving and walking tests use two mobile phones connected to a single vMobile™. vMobile™ runs a simple script to make and receive calls, sending and recording voice files in an embedded loop during the call. Analyzes speech files using the POLQA algorithm while also providing signal/noise level, voice activity and audio loss analysis. vMobile™ connects to the phone tethered port via WiFi and control of the vMobile™ is done using the console application.
The road test lasted about three and a half hours from Gaithersburg, Maryland, to Ocean City, New Jersey, USA. The walking test was conducted on the Ocean City, New Jersey boardwalk and lasted approximately 40 minutes. In both tests, the vMobile™ and both phones were placed in a small, lightweight backpack (2 pounds total weight) for travel convenience and easy portability during walking tests. The onboard vMobile™ battery is sufficient for this driving and walking test, but if extended testing is required, an external power pack (lightweight and inexpensive) can be connected to the vMobile™.

Using vMobile™ or VQuad™, data throughput can be tested on mobile phones independent of voice quality testing. Using an application installed on a mobile device (supports Android and IOS), vMobile™ can automate the GL NetTest testing solution and send all results to a central database and access using WebViewer™. The following test results were run concurrently with the vMobile™ Voice Quality Driver test, essentially running a TCP speed test per VQT call.

Main features
- Network independent drive test/walk test solution (supports any network and any operator)
- Supports narrowband, wideband and ultra-wideband audio
- Voice, video and data tests can be run simultaneously using GL vMobile™ scripts (network permitting) (provided the GL NetTest app is installed on the mobile device)
- When GPS is not available, plot results using GPS coordinates or ITS
- vMobile™ and GL VQuad™ with Dual UTA HD work together for automated testing
- vMobile™ supports two Bluetooth® phones or one PTT mobile radio (user configurable). In addition, vMobile™ supports GPS receivers, WiFi for central system connectivity, and Bluetooth™ for control/configuration/status and operations
- Full-featured remote functionality allowing loading configurations, starting/stopping tests and retrieving test results
- vMobile™ operates independently of a network connection and can be controlled directly from the onboard menu or via a Bluetooth connection. All network drops (data and voice) are logged to vMobile™ logs and can be retrieved through the vMobile™ console
- Test measurements are sent to a central database along with GPS and ITS information. Results can be queried/filtered, plotted on Google Maps or ITS viewer, and exported to customizable reports
