Whirlwind Michang update: The Andhra Pradesh government has issued an alert for eight districts in the state ahead of severe cyclone Michang making landfall on the Bapattra coast on Tuesday.
The districts where alerts have been issued include Bapatra, Tirupati, Nellore, Prakasam, Krishna, West Godavari, Konaserma and Kakinada. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Cyclone Michang is expected to make landfall near Bapatra around noon on Tuesday.

Upon landfall, severe cyclonic storms may be accompanied by wind gusts of up to 100 kilometers per hour. Meanwhile, Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy on Monday directed officials to remain on high alert.
During a review meeting held at his office, the chief minister directed officials to consider the storm as a major challenge to avoid loss of life and property. He also directed officials to prioritize safe transportation for pregnant women, nursing mothers and the elderly, in addition to monitoring the spread of infectious diseases.
He also said in a press release accessed by news agency PTI that special officers have been appointed for all cyclone Michang-affected districts besides Rs 2 crore each for rescue workers.
Reddy further said that the Special Officer will work with the Collector and the government will meet any request for more funds, if required. The chief minister also directed officials to provide financial assistance of Rs 2,500 to each family and Rs 1,000 to individual evacuees.
For the affected thatched huts, Reddy directed officials to provide assistance of Rs 10,000. In addition, rations such as 25 kilograms of rice, beans, cooking oil, onions and potatoes will also be distributed to the evacuees.
Impact of Cyclone Michang: Flights to and from Tirupati Airport canceled
Tirupati Airport Director KM Basavaraju said around 15 flights (14 scheduled and 1 non-scheduled) were canceled on Monday due to heavy rain and strong winds caused by the severe cyclonic storm. Airlines also advise passengers to check flight status before heading to the airport.

As of 02:30 am, severe cyclonic storm Michaung was over the central and western Bay of Bengal, with its center located about 20 km northeast of Nellore, 170 km south of Chennai, 150 km south of Bapatra and south-southwest of Machilipatnam 210 km. According to IMD. In the past 6 hours, the weather system moved north-northwest with wind speed of 7 km/h.
