A new Salesforce survey shows a widening “trust gap” between consumers and companies using artificial intelligence, with many expressing concern about the technology’s potentially unethical use.
On Aug. 28, the customer relationship software company released the results of a survey of more than 14,000 consumers and companies in 25 countries, showing that nearly three-quarters of customers are concerned about the unethical use of artificial intelligence.
More than 40 percent of customers surveyed do not trust companies to use AI ethically, and nearly 70 percent say that as AI technology advances, it becomes more important for companies to be trustworthy.
One thing is clear: there is a risk of a trust gap in AI.

Salesforce highlighted that respondents have become less open to using AI since last year.
In the 2022 survey, more than 80% of business buyers and 65% of consumers are willing to use artificial intelligence to improve the experience, but the two have dropped to 73% and 51%, respectively.

Meanwhile, another survey of nearly 1,500 Australians by market research firm Roy Morgan, published on August 28, found that nearly 60 per cent of respondents believed AI was “creating more problems than it solves”. .
One in five also believed the technology would put humanity at risk of extinction by 2043 – echoing concerns from AI experts who signed a letter in May agreeing to mitigate the effects of AI. Human extinction risk should be a global priority.
