Mott Haven, Bronx (WABC) — A child was shot and killed in the Bronx on Tuesday night and two people are in custody.
The 8-year-old boy was shot in the thigh near his home on Beekman Avenue just after 5 p.m.
He is currently in stable condition and receiving treatment at a local hospital.
The boy was walking on the sidewalk with his grandmother when he was struck by gunfire.
“They grabbed the baby and everyone dispersed. With bullets, no one waits, you know?” neighbor Alejandrina Brioso said.
Police rushed to the scene and hunted down the two suspects before they fled the scene.
Police recovered a firearm at the scene and sources said police surveillance video showed at least one man firing at an unknown target in the neighborhood.
“They were just shooting back and forth, and the baby was caught in the middle, and everyone just dissipated — ducked, that’s it,” Brioso said.
It’s unclear what led to the shooting.
The identities of the two detainees have not been released.
The investigation is ongoing.
This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
